A lot has been made in the last few about the inability for Cowboys to win games in December. A lot has been made about whether Wade Phillips or QB Tony Romo simply does not know how to finish games late in the season. The situation in Dallas stands in stark contrast to December in San Diego, not only in terms of W’s and L’s, but also in terms of attention and storylines.
With San Diego’s victory Sunday afternoon in Dallas, Philip Rivers has a record of 16-0 in December, better than any QB in the history of the league. The Chargers have rattled off a convincing 8 game win streak and will play for a first round bye next week against Cincinnati.
So while the nation focuses on in turmoil in Dallas, let us not overlook brilliance in San Diego.
The Chargers came out fast, playing in a hostile environment against a team that has much to prove. And as has been the case for the last few seasons in San Diego, Philip Rivers made the plays exactly when San Diego needed them, going for 21 of 32 272 yards and a touchdown strike to Antonio gates. Last season, Rivers was in the top three in nearly all statistical categories for quarterbacks (and was mysteriously not in the Pro Bowl), and if the Chargers succeed in making a deep January run, many will look back and wonder why the Charger’s young superstar was left out of the MVP conversation.
However, the last two victorious months owe much to an improved defense, in which youngsters and backups have played with strength and pride. Sunday in Dallas, the piecemeal defense held Dallas on a thrilling goal line stand, repelling the Cowboys on three straight snaps from the one.
And while Tomlinson was held to only 50 yards, he was effective enough to run for one score, and allow the Chargers to control the clock in fourth. If this does prove to be LT’s last season in SD, he seems bent on making a serious contribution to a deep playoff run.
The Chargers will face a tough Bengals team next week, a game that will be factor into playoff seating in the AFC. But remember, its December, the Chargers are on fire, and all the pieces are in place.
